I first wanted to thank everyone who participated in the 2017 Open in any way, shape or form. It’s a fun 5 weeks, but what makes it a great event is all our members and friends who support it.
An Open workout does not happen if the individual doing it does not have a judge. We had so many members who would show up on Saturday JUST to help out with judging. Or who would stay after class and judge a fellow member for their workout. You know who you are and I cant thank you enough for doing this.
I want to recognize those who committed to doing all 5 of the workouts. It is not an easy 5 weeks, and things do come up, but getting through all 5 workouts is a huge accomplishment in my book. Also, your team captain definitely appreciates it. Well done!
Despite getting injured in week one, Joshua continued to be just as involved in the Open. He continued to coach and work with our members with a great attitude. I am proud of him for that.
Though she is small, she is fierce. This was on Jeff’s shirt but quite perfectly describes Mel during the Open (and in general). Each and every workout for Mel was heavy and was a fight. She showed so much heart and determination during the Open. For that, she wins the CrossFit Redondo Spirit Award
This was Husky Mark’s first Open, but he started with a bang! Mark is in his early 50’s, so he’s one of these guys that must use the same weights/settings as Matt Fraser, despite being 20 years older than him. This, and the fact that Mark has been doing CrossFit for less than a year, might make one think he would have to scale some movements. Not so. Mark did every single workout as written, as RX!
Along the same lines, Dr. Aaron is also a few years away from getting to the ligher weights in the 55+ division. Aaron had an awesome Open, making Bar MU’s, Chest to Bars, Toes to Bar and double unders seem easy.
On 17.5, according to BeyondTheWhiteboard, Caitie’s time of 10:33 was in the 94th percentile for women
The Repeat Warrior Award just has to go to Mark Spalding. He repeated 17.4 and added a few HSPU’s to his previous score. He also repeated 17.5 and PR’ed by a crazy 2.5 minutes! Spalding also came in multiple Saturday’s just to judge and support other members
I was able to judge a couple of Tara’s Open workouts. She showed so much patience and grit during 17.1 and 17.5. The 35lb DB and the 65lb thruster are not movements she has ever done, so each rep had to be fought for. Tara did 4 of the workouts as RX this year!
Not falling far from the tree, Young Ben (16) had to really dig deep on the 95lb snatches, 225lb deadlifts, and 95lb thrusters. But Ben always showed up to the workout with a smile, and never complained about things being heavy.
Our eldest member, Richard E, truly inspired this Open. He did every workout as RX. He absolutely crushed 17.1, making the DB look light and the box jumps looks seamless. He also got the most DU’s he ever has in a single session on 17.5.
On 17.3 (Snatches/Pullups) Stacey placed in the top 200 in SoCal. This was the best finish in the gym for any single workout in the individual category.
Dr. Lynn finished 31st in the SoCal 40-44 division. She had a very consistent showing this year, showing her skills are very well-rounded.
The Silver Fox (Dick Haynes) finished 30th in SoCal 60+ division! His best finish was the snatch/pullup workout where he finished 23rd in SoCal. Dick is also the first guy to stop his warm up and help judge another member
Showing incredible progress from last year’s Open, Kathy finished 40th in SoCal in the 55-59 division. Her two best workouts were 17.2 and 17.5 where she finished 35th on both in her division.
Wendy had another great CrossFit Open. She finished 17.5 in 33:05. She also smashed the deadlifts on 17.4 !
This was Kelly’s first Open since having Carson, and she did every single workout. Her and Colin were there every Saturday both working hard and helping judge other athletes. They truly embody what the CFR community is all about.
Jeff and Emily were always on hand to help out with judging, print score sheets and cheer hard for our CFR athletes. Emily was able to rep our awesome looking bar-muscle ups on 17.2, while Jeff showed that his OH mobility is paying off by snatching 95 for many reps
Katie B basically performed two-a-days by watching the CFR kids and then running into the gym and busting out Open workouts. I think if she could, she would the entire Open with Brookie strapped to her back!
Speaking of Buckley’s, Rob turned in another great Open performance. He had two top 500 performances in the SoCal region on 17.3 and 17.5. I also think Rob won the award for “Most Members Judged”. The guy is a judging machine!
We had one gym member move on to the next round of the CrossFit Games season, that was Tia. Tia worked very hard this past year and finished 175th worldwide in the 16-17 girls division (Tia is actually 15, but she turns 16 before the Games in July). She finished 6th overall in SoCal in her division. We are very excited for her Qualifier on April 20-24th
Joe S was a regular at the Big Saturday’s where he put in some awesome efforts on the workouts. The stand out effort was on 17.3 where he was able to Santch 135 for 5 reps!
Dr. Marc got 19th in SoCal on 17.3 in the 60+ division! His dedication to both the weightlifting and gymnastics class paid off during that workout
Dropping into a gym in Cincinnati, Jane crushed 17.1 and finished it under the 20 minute time cap. She also worked very hard on her double unders during the Open, and it paid off big time as she finished 17.5 in 34 minutes!
Brian was able to snatch 135 for 3 reps during 17.3! I believe his 1RM coming into that workout was 145, so a job well done hitting 95% in the middle of a workout
Always smiling, always positive, Shana rocked another Open. She not only works hard on her own workouts, but she supports her fellow members with loud cheers and epic dances! Her 17.4 deadlift video basically went viral on Facebook too
Scott M fought and fought during 17.5, and finished right around 39 minutes. He did 350 double unders, but he also probably did around 500 singles too. Scott continues to make big strides in his fitness. Scott is another member who is always ready to judge and help out with another member
A big thank you to Paul K who took some great photographs of our members doing the Open. He also excelled on several workouts, including getting bar muscle ups and PRing on 17.4 from last year
How about Dr. Dave doing 17.4 and then running a marathon a few days later?
