Jess B has been training at CrossFit Redondo for a little over a year. Her consistency and dedication to her training has allowed her to reach many of her fitness goals. Below she shares some of her CrossFit expereinces as well as her future plans in the field of diet and nutrition.
1. What was your fitness level like when you started CrossFit? Athletic background, diet, workout routine etc?
Prior to CrossFit, I was a distance runner and completed several half-marathons and a full marathon; I never lifted a weight. The long runs were getting boring and I wanted to change it up. About 2.5 years ago I became really interested in the real-food/ancestral health movement. I began reading tons of books and collecting cookbooks. All of my favorite authors were involved with CrossFit, so I decided to try it out.
2. You've participated in numerous running races both before and during your time training CrossFit. Any insight on how CrossFit training has affected your running?
Although I've dialed back my running significantly, I still enjoy running local 5/10k's. I've actually found that I get better times in races now than before I was doing CrossFit, without having to log tons of miles.
3. What has been the biggest change you've seen in your life since starting CrossFit?
By incorporating a more mindful way of eating, paired with CrossFit, I've seen some HUGE changes. When I was running a lot, I was constantly craving carbs and lived on Cheerios and bread. Now, I have a better understanding as to which foods and workouts work best for me. I also used to freak out if I did not get a run in every single day. With CrossFit, I know I am getting more out of the workouts and that it's OK to take a rest days.
4. You are working towards a nutrition degree. Can you explain exactly what that degree entails and how you've implemented your education into your own diet?
I have a Bachelors degree in Dietetics & Nutrition/Fitness and my Registered Dietitian (RD) credential. I am currently completing my Masters in Nutrition Science at Cal State Long Beach. I've always been interested in Sports Nutrition and I'm actually focusing my Thesis Project on nutrition for CrossFit athletes (stay tuned!). I will graduate with my Masters in May of next year.
I've learned a lot about the implications that diet has on chronic disease development and athletic performance. From my education, I definitely advocate a real/whole-food approach when it comes to diet and try to incorporate that into my own diet.
