Like tens of thousands of other CrossFitter’s worldwide, my thoughts have been consumed with Kevin Ogar for the past few days. Kevin is an elite level CrossFitter from Colorado. I’ve never met Kevin but here’s what I know about him: he’s 6’2 about 210lbs and played rugby at the University of Missouri-Colombia. He runs a 5K in 18:45 and can deadlift 550lbs. He’s a CrossFit coach, competitor and was hoping to make a run at the CrossFit Games.
Kevin had a major and traumatic injury on Sunday at the OC Throwdown. He has undergone 2 surgeries and is currently paralyzed from the waist down. His life will be changed forever, and his journey to recovery is just beginning.
Kevin’s incident has been far-reaching in the CrossFit community; one look at any social media outlet and you’ll see an outpouring of support for him. I think there are a million things that could be said about this incident, and obviously negative. But if this tragic incident has showed us anything, it is that the CrossFit community, though large and growing, is interconnected in the most extraordinary way. When one our own is in trouble, we will be there for them.
Our small extension of the bigger community of CrossFit will help Kevin cover his medical expenses by buying his T-shirts and wearing them during the “Ogar” WOD that will be done next Saturday the 25th.*
Kevin was severely injured doing the thing he loved best. But in true CrossFit fashion, I have a feeling he will fight through this next phase no matter how hard it gets. Sometimes the very worst happens to those that can handle it best.
